LOS ANGELES, CA — College basketball fans witnessed another upset on Saturday as tiny Mercer College defeated freshman sensation OJ Mayo.

“He was as good as advertised,” Mercer standout James Florence told SSNN. “But in the end, our five guys were just too tough for him to handle.”

Despite scoring 32 points in the game, Mayo struggled with turnovers and was unable to stop Mercer’s consistent five on one fast breaks. But the controversial freshman chalked up Saturday’s loss as a valuable learning experience.

“They got the best of me. I tip my hat to Mercer,” Mayo told reporters after the game. “But I turned the ball over and didn’t shoot well until it was too late. For me to win, I’m going to have to cut down on those silly mistakes.”

Mayo’s head coach, Tim Floyd, was hesitant to place all of the blame on Mayo. He did say, though, that his star freshman needs to get stronger on the defensive end.

“If OJ wants to win this alone, he’s going to have to dedicate himself to defense, plain and simple,” Floyd said. “Hell, when OJ offered to handle this season himself, I figured he’d sort of coach himself too. Well, clearly he needs my guidance on the defensive end. I’m thinking we may instituted a Box-and-1 zone; without the box, of course.”

Mayo is scheduled to take on The Citadel on Wednesday.
