EUGENE, OR — A mixture of frat humor and college ingenuity has caused confusion among University of Oregon faculty this football season.
Since skyrocketing up the polls as a result of star quarterback Dennis Dixon, student-made banners reading “Dixon your mouth” have become increasingly popular at Ducks home games, as well as local campus bars and restaurants. Apparently, the reference is lost on many of the school’s teachers and administrators.
“I don’t get it,” history professor Clark Knappenberger told SSNN. “It’s like a boxing thing, right? Like Dennis will hit them in the mouth?”
After underachieving last year, Dixon’s stellar play has the star quarterback thinking Heisman, and the Ducks just weeks away from a BCS Championship Game berth. As the team continues to succeed, Dennis Dixon mania has spread across the state. Following every Ducks win, students can be heard screaming the unexplained slogan.
“Dixon your mouth, bitch!” Oregon sophomore Brock Hay screamed after the Ducks defeated defending Pac 10 champion USC. “Don’t act like you don’t like it!”
Even the media has caught on to the new craze. Portland’s ABC affiliate profiled the Ducks last week, and asked several students for their take on the meaning of the mysterious sign.
“You’re kidding, right?” U of O senior Lyndsay Tenant responded. “Just think about it for a second.”
