DES MOINES, IA — As the 2008 race »”>presidential race heats up, an interesting proposal has emerged from an unlikely source.
According to reports, democratic candidate Barack Obama and struggling republican candidate John McCain have officially proposed to the Federal Election Commission that the 2008 presidential result be determined using the championship series »”>Bowl Championship Series scoring system that is used to determine the NCAA football championship game contenders.
“You look at something like the BCS, which adds such excitement to college football,” Obama said. “I just figured, why not take that same sort of excitement and add it to the presidential race?”
McCain concurred. “I really consider myself the Kansas Jayhawks of the presidential race,” he said. “My conservative style and relative anonymity doesn’t really rock it with the voters. But if you pop me into a computer, I’m a contender.”
According to a sample version of the proposed presidential BCS rankings, Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani are still ranked numbers one and two, respectively, with scores of .9874 for Clinton and .9628 for Giuliani. But after that is where it gets interesting, as Obama and McCain lead a quartet of candidates that includes Mitt Romney and John Edwards, where all the candidates are between .7948 and .8367. Trailing mightily in the BCS presidential standings is Joe Biden, with a paltry score of .5373.
SSNN The Book: Buy it Today!” align=”right”/>“You might say I’m the ‘Hawaii‘ of the BCS presidential standings,” Biden said. “I feel like my record is pretty solid. I feel like I haven’t made any huge mistakes. I don’t have any losses. And yet, I’m not part of the elite, I’m not part of the establishment, so I just get totally screwed.”
Clinton indicated that she would reserve comment the presidential BCS plan until it has received full consideration from the FEC. She did indicate that she was not optimistic that it would be embraced by the public.
“The public hates the real BCS,” she said. “This is just another example of Barack Obama’s inexperience. Why are they going to then take the same stupid system and use it to choose something as important as the president of the United States? It’s stupid to fix what’s not broken, especially when what’s not broken is as perfect as the electoral college.”
