NBC cancels remainder of 2007 Notre Dame football season

NEW YORK, NY — Following last Saturday’s loss to the Air Force Academy, NBC head Jeffrey Zucker has decided to cancel the remaining portion of Notre Dame’s football season.

“The Irish just aren’t a good fit for our programming lineup right now,” Zucker told reporters. “The network has taken a severe hit with the writer’s strike, and we can’t afford to bleed any longer.”

The Irish have long been a big draw for NBC, but the team’s 1-9 start this year has been a ratings disaster for the peacock network. Concern is now growing within Notre Dame’s athletic department that without the lucrative TV contract, the school will be unable to afford the extensive costs of running a Division I program.

While it is unknown what NBC will air in place of the Irish, inside sources reveal the children’s cartoon Dora the Explorer to be a frontrunner. Other potential Saturday programming includes reruns of Law & Order SVU and a rebroadcast of the previous Friday’s Today Show.

“My players have worked too hard to just cancel the season,” Notre Dame Head Coach Charlie Weiss told SSNN. “These kids come here with the expectation to go to a BCS game whether they deserve to or not. It’s an intrinsic right for all Notre Dame. To take that away from them is a travesty.”

  2. In a related development, my BA in Philosophy from Notre Dame (’69)has been recalled by the College of Liberal Arts for warranty work.

When I graduated, my degree was allegedly equipped to supply of all the necessary mental components a concerned alumni would ever need to remain “philosophical” about Notre Dame’s losses in football.

No one then anticipated the debacle of the 2007 season, but even with 2 games remaining, the University has recognized that upgrades must be installed for an alumni to have even a marginal chance of remaining philosophical during the remainder of Charlie Weis’ tenure as coach.
