TEMPE, AZ — With fellow receiver Anquan Boldin out due to injury last weekend, third-year wideout Larry Fitzgerald led the Arizona Cardinals to a 34-31 victory over their division foes, the St. Louis Rams. But after the game, Fitzgerald wanted nothing to do with talk about his nine reception, 136-yard game.
“This is driving me insane,” Fitzgerald said. “I’ve been trying to get off the Cardinals mailing list for two years now, and still every Monday I get the stupid newsletter. This is why this organization never wins.”
Fitzgerald’s comments became more and more inflammatory, including accusations that the Cardinals have been giving out his email to other websites, before some of the veterans on the team took the youngster aside and calmed him down.
“I’m sorry, it’s just that I like my inbox to stay clean. I’m a professional athlete – I can’t be bothered with junk mail,” he said. “I can’t be havin’ no spam!”
Quarterback Matt Leinart said he understood Fitzgerald’s frustration, citing an incident from his time with USC.
“That’s why LenDale [White] and Reggie [Bush] had beef with each other,” Leinart explained. “It had nothing to do with sharing playing time. One time Reggie gave LenDale’s email to like 60 or 70 different mailing lists; I thought LenDale was going to kill him.”
Fitzgerald said that before he returns takes the field this weekend he plans on having a sit-down with head coach Ken Whisenhunt and webmaster Glen Calhoun, who is also in charge of the team’s internal mailing list and newsletter.
“Personally, I like what Glen does with the newsletter,” Whisenhunt said. “He uses a lot of graphics and includes important information. He even does this joke-of-the-week thing at the end that’s hysterical. I’m not sure why anyone wouldn’t want to be a part of that, but rest assured we’ll find out.”
