JOLIET, IL — A recent White Sox off-day allowed Jim Thome the opportunity to spend the afternoon out in public, taking in the Pixar movie Ratatouille – by himself.
“Again?!?” asked an incredulous Jermaine Dye, when informed that Thome had gone to see the high-brow, low-brow, is-it-for-children-or-is-it-for-adults flick. “That’s at least the third time that I know of. We saw it as a team in Detroit, right when it came out. Ozzie (Guillen) is a freak for animation. Then, I knew that Jim went again to see it, with some of his nieces and nephews. But I’m a little surprised to hear that he went again by himself.
Thome smiled sheepishly when confronted with the news.
“Actually, between you, me, and the wall, this was my fourth time seeing it,” he said. “After the time with Ozzie and the gang, I had to go by myself, to hear the dialogue. That Remy says some insightful stuff, and you just can’t hear anything if you go to the movies with A.J. Pierzynski.”
At press time there was no word as to whether Thome would see the movie again, though there is talk that he’ll be purchasing the DVD for the White Sox clubhouse at U.S. Cellular Field. The slugger, who is zeroing in on 500 homers, did not seem to be embarrassed about his proclivity for the animated rodent and his Parisian cuisine capers.
“The movie is more than just being about food and a little rat,” Thome said. “The movie is about love and loss; hope and belief and the faith in the dawning of a new and brighter day. And let me tell you something – Jim Thome is also about love and loss; hope and belief, and the faith in the dawning of a new, brighter day. Frankly, I think this whole team should be more about those things.”
