New phrase added to sports vernacular

DURHAM, NC — Durham Bulls catcher Crash Davis has updated the official list of sports clichés, the first such update in years. Media members and players have been asking for new material, but Davis said the tipping point came when players began boring themselves to sleep during interviews.

“I’m proud to announce the inclusion of ‘it’s a cliché because it’s true’ to the official list of clichés,” Davis said. “Check this out: We gotta play ‘em one day at a time. Sure, it’s a cliché but it’s a cliché because it’s true. See what I did there? That just went from being a boring quote to a goddamn classic.”

Davis was put in charge of sports clichés shortly after his retirement from baseball. He has been criticized recently for a lack of new material, but Davis claims that the nature of clichés being what they are, he can’t exactly just create new ones.

Still, he’s certain that this newest addition will take off.

“Did you hear what I just said?” he asked. “My mouth was moving, words were coming out, but I wasn’t really saying anything. There is no way any self-respecting ball player can resist that.”

SSNN spoke with multiple athletes who were thrilled with the new addition to the cliché master list. They collectively wanted everyone to know that while this is a huge victory for them, they are taking it one game at a time. After all, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!
