LOS ANGELES, CA — The blogosphere, paparazzi and sports world all went crazy at the same time Wednesday, when it was announced that Kobe Bryant and Jermaine O’Neal are now friends on Facebook.
According to sources close to the situation, Bryant had extended an invitation for a public vindication of their friendship over a month ago, which O’Neal was informed about via automatic email. However, the request to confirm the friendship sat unanswered for the last 30-plus days, as O’Neal considered the level and significance of the pair’s relationship. Ultimately, he decided to announce it publicly, a move that is seen by many as a precursor to a trade to the Lakers.
“I’m thrilled that Jermaine has accepted my offer of friendship, and I hope that this leads to years and years of championships together,” Bryant said. O’Neal was less vociferous, but according to his Facebook page, his current mood is “content,” which Bryant immediately attributed to their friendship.
“When you’ve got a good friend, like Jermaine has with me, you should feel content. Content is a good word for how you should feel. Content is definitely how I feel.” Bryant’s page belied his claim, however, stating that his mood was “ecstatic.”
O’Neal is presently considering whether or not to throw a sheep at Bryant, using the “superpoke” application that he recently downloaded. Word from O’Neal’s camp is that he’s unsure as to whether Bryant will react negatively to the wool-producing projectile.
“Jermaine is a bit concerned about throwing a sheep at Kobe,” said a source close to the situation. “Kobe takes himself really seriously. We’re not sure if he’s going to get that it’s a joke.”
“He can throw a sheep at me if he wants to,” Bryant said. “If he wants to die.”
