Brady Quinn receiving special protection from Joe Thomas

CLEVELAND, OH — Cleveland Browns left tackle Joe Thomas has taken some unusual steps to protect rookie quarterback Brady Quinn this preseason.

Thomas has been spotted carrying Quinn around in his mouth, throughout the locker room, to the practice field, and onto the team’s planes. He has built a “lair” out of sticks, hay, and couch cushions in the corner of the closet, and has encouraged Quinn to take frequent naps while he stands guard.

He even bit Braylon Edwards when the wideout got too close to the former quarterback of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

“Took a chunk outta my leg, yes he did,” Edwards said. “I probably should have stopped going toward Brady when I heard the growling coming from Joe Thomas. But I wanted to go over and tussle Brady’s hair, he’s so adorable, you know, you just want to pet him. Well, I learned my lesson.” Edwards will miss one to two practices with the contusion on his leg.

Quinn does not seem to mind being babied by Thomas, and was seen contendedly trotting behind the big lineman after practice last week as Thomas cleared out a crew of reporters anxious to talk to Quinn. Other Browns don’t seem to mind either. “Circle of life,” Kellen Winslow, Jr. said. “You gotta protect your young.”

Not every Brown is happy. Apparently quarterback Charlie Frye, who is the likely starter of the first game of the 2007 season, is not so pleased. “Look, you want your linemen to protect you,” Frye said. “You don’t want them to stand there scratching at you. Pretty much every time I call a play in the huddle, there’s a hiss that comes from the O-line. I’m fairly certain it’s Thomas. And then you get sacked twenty times in practice by the same guy, b’c your offensive lineman is trying to nurse your backup? It’s a little messed up.”

Thomas has declared he will not stop, however, although in an apparent concession, he’s requested that the Browns provide him with a nanny who can assist him in the care and feeding of Quinn when Thomas is, you know, in an NFL game, or otherwise predisposed.

According to an unnamed Browns player, this concession came after Thomas was nearly suspended after coach Romeo Crennel caught him preparing his saliva so he could properly bathe Quinn after practice Tuesday.
