NEW YORK, NY — The NBA league office revealed more specifics about the FBI investigation involving former referee Tim Donaghy on Thursday. A league official told SSNN that Commissioner Stern was first contacted by the FBI after a number of suspicious bets were made.
“A number of casinos began taking bets on how many calls Mr. Donaghy would blow in a game,” the source said. “We were able to trace some bets back to Mr. Donaghy. It actually wasn’t all that hard; he used Tom Donaghy as his alias.”
According to the league official – who spoke on condition of anonymity – it was also clear that Donaghy had a connection to the mob. Multiple officials complained about the shirts Donaghy wore under his referee outfit, including a “Vote Hoffa For Referee Union Leader” and a Chicago Bulls jersey with the name “Capone” on the back.
“It got out of control for a while,” the source said. “After a below average performance review, he threatened to leave a horse’s head in David Stern’s bed. Before games he would spend a couple of hours in front of a mirror working on his Don Corleone impersonation. It’s amazing we didn’t catch on sooner.”
