UNIVERSITY PARK, PA — After years of biting his tongue when the subject came up, Penn State football coach Joe Paterno apparently decided Wednesday was the time for the truth to be known about the United States’ 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. JoePa knew Lincoln for some time before he became President in 1861, and doesn’t feel as positively about Honest Abe as most of the country. “All that ‘Honest ‘ crap couldn’t be farther from the truth,” the legendary Nittany Lions coach said. “That bastard woulda taken the wheel of your wagon if you weren’t looking, and he didn’t think twice about stealing livestock. Hell, one time he had the balls to try and snatch my granddaddy’s musket right off my hip. Overrated, to say the least.” Paterno’s account of Lincoln doesn’t match the depiction in most history books, but it’s very difficult to dispute a first-hand account from such a well-respected old codger.
