Maddux living on edge

SAN DIEGO, CA — Greg Maddux doesn’t spend his off days the way most MLB players do. Instead of catching of up on some rest, the San Diego Padres pitcher is out doing something most would consider crazy. Whether he’s sky-surfing over the Pacific Ocean or base-jumping off the Empire State Building in New York City, Maddux is always on the lookout for his next adrenaline rush. “If you haven’t stared death in the face at least one time a week, then you’re just not living brother,” the probable first-ballot Hall of Famer said while preparing for his next stunt. “I’ve been inches away from a toe-tag at least a dozen times. Hell, just last week I narrowly escaped with my life while wakeboarding down the Amazon River. Take my advice – stay away from hippos.” The terms of Maddux’s contract with the Padres stipulate that the pitcher is allowed to participate in any activity, no matter the risk. Strangely, Padres GM Kevin Towers is perfectly at ease. “It’s nice to have a guy in the clubhouse with a little bit of a wild streak,” Towers said. “Every time we need a spark, Mad-dawg is there to deliver. If he needs to go bungee jump off some bridge somewhere to keep his edge, I’m all for it – better that than abandon his team like that Clemens asshole.”
