DENVER, CO — The only thing that Allen Iverson wanted to do after his team lost in the first round of the NBA Playoffs was get out of town and relax with his family. After a week or so of planning a getaway, the Denver Nuggets star had his bags packed and hopped onto a first class flight to Fiji, family in tow.
Somewhere between Denver and Atlanta, Iverson became irate after an argument with flight attendants over how many bags of peanuts he would be allowed during the flight. As the incident progressed, pilots made the decision to land at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and escort Iverson off of the plane.
After being extensively questioned by representatives from the FAA, Iverson made himself available to the media in an attempt to explain his side of the story.
“It’s easy to sum up – I mean, we’re just talkin’ ’bout peanuts. We’re sitting here, and I’m supposed to be riding first class, and we’re talking peanuts,” the four time NBA scoring champion said. “I mean listen, we’re sitting here talking about peanuts – not a meal, not a meal, not a meal, but peanuts. Not the in-flight meal that I get on there and wait for and give everything I have to give for; we’re talking about peanuts man. How silly is that?”
Apparently, a stewardess tried to explain to Iverson that he would only be allowed one bag of peanuts before the in-flight meal was served. She addressed the media at a separate press event, held by the FAA.
“I told Mr. Iverson that we take things seriously at our organization and we don’t bend the rules for anyone,” flight attendant Dawn Pae said. “He needs to realize that what he does on the plane affects everyone else, and that he is not above those people – at least, not the other first class passengers. Peanuts are a tool to prepare you for the actual meal – he needs to realize that before he can consider himself a great traveler.”
For the time being, Iverson will not be disciplined for the events that took place on the plane, but sources are speculating that he will definitely be seeking a new airline to travel with in the future.
