The sports world is scrambling to keep up with Major League Baseball for the first time in years this Sunday. While many leagues have nothing planned for Mother’s Day, the MLB has decided to use pink bats to celebrate the holiday.
“Baseball definitely beat us to the punch on this one,” NBA commissioner David Stern said. “We toyed with using a pink basketball or putting a picture of my mother on the balls, but ultimately we elected not to. We’re in the playoffs and we can’t compromise the integrity of the game. Besides, none of those ideas are really moneymakers.”
Others have not given up so easily, though. A group of boxing promoters assembled a card of some of the world’s most famous boxers in a special Mother’s Day Event.
The most talked about event of the night will be Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting his father, Floyd Mayweather Sr. Senior will be dressed in drag for the event, and will go by the name Floyda Momweather. The main event will be Oscar De La Hoya fighting his mother, Cecilia.
“This is so great, I’m so honored to share the ring with my mom,” De La Hoya said. “I think this will be a great bonding experience for us, especially because I’ve forgotten to get her something for Mother’s Day the last couple of years.”
De La Hoya added that he has held a grudge against his mother since the age of 10, when she did not buy him a pony for his birthday. Both Oscar and Cecilia insist the fight will be bloody.
Also getting into the spirit of the holiday is the World Series of Poker, who will have a tournament on Sunday with some of the world’s best poker players and their mothers. While most players who were invited to the event have accepted, not all are excited about the tournament.
“I don’t stand a chance against my mom,” said 2006 Player of the Year Jeff Madsen. “She always knew when I was lying as a kid – how am I going to bluff her now?”

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!
