NCAA to discontinue March Madness

ATLANTA, GA — Mere hours after the NCAA Basketball Championship game, NCAA President Myles Brand announced that 2007 marked the final year of the age-old tradition of a March tournament to decide the season’s champion.

“We put an awful lot of effort into picking these 65 teams, and it’s become apparent that it’s an utter waste of time,” Brand told reporters at a Tuesday press conference. “The BCS has a pretty good formula worked out, and it seems to accurately predict the participants in the basketball championship game, so we’re just going to piggy-back on that.”

According to Brand, extensive research has shown that the BCS football formula is at least as equitable a method for determining which teams should compete in the finals as a single-elimination tournament. When questioned about changes that might be made to adapt the formula for basketball, Brand clarified the plan.

“I think you’re misunderstanding me. We’re not using the formula, we’re using the results – as you can see from this year’s finals, the BCS football equation gives us the top two basketball teams as well. We did consider scrapping the championship game altogether and just giving the basketball trophy to the football champs, but that seemed a bit too extreme.”

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!
