CLEVELAND, OH – Before Sunday’s playoff win over the Washington Wizards, the Cleveland Cavaliers announced that they have signed Sanjaya Malakar to a 10-day contract. Malakar’s basketball background is largely unknown, and the signing has already been widely criticized. To make room for Malakar on the playoff roster, veteran guard David Wesley was released.

“Wesley just wasn’t the player we thought he would be when we signed him last off-season,” said Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry. “Furthermore, he doesn’t fit what we’re trying to do hair-wise.”

Malakar was not available for comment before the game. In the last couple days he had been said to be very disappointed by his recent dismissal from American Idol and considering a career change.

“Sanjaya actually approached me,” Ferry said. “He’s been doing some soul-searching and he feels he needs to be with kindred spirits. He just kept talking about how he was meant to stand alongside Varejao, Pollard and Gooden.”

Malakar did participate in the team’s shoot-around and will be available to play for Game 2 of the first round series. Ferry thinks it is unlikely that he will see much action, though.

“From what I’ve seen, he plays basketball like he sings – but what do I care? I’ve got LeBron James; maybe you’ve heard of him? We can put any four scrubs on the floor with that guy and win games over the depleted Wizards, we’re just hoping Sanjaya can bring in a new fan base.”
