WNBA finds new audience

NEW YORK, NY — Despite the improvement of talent and competition in the WNBA, the league has struggled to find a way to attract an audience comparable to the NBA. The parent league and Commissioner David Stern have spent a fortune trying to raise the profile of the WNBA. One notable gimmick was an ad campaign showing players dressed to the nines, in an attempt to display the beauty that is not always apparent on the court.

Neither this effort nor any of the others have had the results the league hoped for. “For some reason, we have had a very tough time increasing the popularity of the WNBA,” said WNBA spokeswoman Jenna “Butch” McKie. “If you’ve seen some of the amazing lay-ups our girls have made in the last year, it’s tough to understand why we haven’t exploded in popularity.”

After months of extensive market research, the league realized they were missing a huge fan base in the strangest place imaginable. Apparently, the WNBA is the number one most-watched sport in prisons across the country, and inmates account for over 90% players’ fan mail.

In light of this new information, the WNBA will now play at least 25 games each year for prison audiences, most of them on-site. “Prisoners love our girls, and say they would like nothing more to get up close and personal with them,” McKie said. “I recently visited Cook County Prison, and I saw posters of WNBA players on more than one cell ceiling. The women’s prisons especially love us.”

Though there are some security concerns that still need to be ironed out, league officials have high hopes for the upcoming season. By taking the game to those who love it most, they should be putting themselves in a great position for success.
