U of I to partner with Champaign police

CHAMPAIGN, IL — In the wake of another brush with the law for University of Illinois student-athletes, Illini Athletic Director Ron Guenther announced a new partnership with the Champaign County Sheriff’s Department. In the deal, U of I coaches will have the ability to offer one-time-use “Get Out of Jail Free” cards to recruits. “In light of recent events, and the general patterns established by our programs of late, we feel this is the best way to protect the integrity of the University and its athletics department,” Guenther said, reading from a prepared statement. “With this landmark fellowship, our players will have a chance to make the kind of immature error in judgement that young people are often prone to, and to escape responsibility and media scrutiny - at least the first time.” The proclamation comes on the heels of two Illini football players being arrested and charged with obstructing justice and possessing stolen property, less than a month after two Illini basketball players were involved in an alcohol-related one-car accident, and only five months after Illini hooper Rich McBride was arrested for DUI. No word yet on whether the “Get Out of Jail Free” card has any conditions – murder, for instance – and neither Guenther nor the CCSD representative answered questions from the media.
