SURPRISE, AZ — After a year away from baseball, former Cubs star Sammy Sosa – now in camp with the Texas Rangers – says he’s ready to contribute to his new ballclub. That task will include picking up the slack from the departed Gary Matthews, Jr., who hit .313 with 102 runs scored and 79 batted in last season and was recently implicated in a steroid investigation. “I’m just very happy to be here,” Sosa told reporters in his lovably broken English. “With Gary leaving, these guys needed a bat like mine; and with the story that just broke about Gary, I think I can really slide right into that niche. I just want to keep it continue.” When asked about the recent steroid controversy, and his own testimony before the United States Congress, Sosa apologized but insisted he couldn’t understand the questions and was incapable of commenting without a translator present.
