NCAA Tourney field to expand
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — NCAA Administrators have announced that beginning next year, all 336 basketball teams will participate in the championship tournament. “We have deserving teams that miss the tournament every year, and this is the only way to remedy that,” NCAA president Myles Brand told media members. The 2008 tournament will begin some time in early February, and “hopefully finish before the end of the calendar year.” Brand said the new format will be used for three years, at which point NCAA officials and coaches will vote to decide whether to keep the “every team in” tournament format or go to a bowl series similar to the one used by NCAA Football. “We feel the BCS has had such a positive impact on collegiate athletics, and it’s so popular with the fans – why not try it in other sports?” Brand asked. “The 64-team tournament is just so last millennium.”
