Griffey making position change
SARASOTA, FL — Despite earlier reports that Cincinnati’s Ken Griffey, Jr. is considering a move to right field, the future Hall of Famer has instead begun to train for a far more radical change. Griffey plans to begin the 2007 campaign as the Reds closer, an unprecedented move for such a prolific hitter outfielder. “Home runs are so last century,” Griffey told reporters after a bullpen session. “Ever since steroid us started to be a big deal, people are naturally suspicious of home run hitters. I want no part of that. Anyway, saves are a much sexier stat these days.” Although the ten-time Gold Glove-winning center fielder is 37 years old, he believes he can hang around in the show for “at least ten more years” as a left-handed reliever. “I’ve got two words for you,” Griffey said. “John Franco.”
