GREEN BAY, WI — It’s not unusual to pick up on personal feelings a commentator may have about certain players on the field during an NFL broadcast.
Still, the sporting world is reeling with shock after reports that long-time announcer and former Raiders coach John Madden let those emotions get the better of him. Madden, color commentator for NBC, was slapped with a restraining order by Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre following a one-sided, long-distance courtship.
Madden has always been openly enamored with the future Hall of Famer, but recent events crossed the line for Favre. “I’ve really appreciated some of the things John has said about me over the years; but he’s gone too far this time,” the former NFL MVP said. “The second he sent me that pair of 3XL lace underwear in the mail, I knew something had to be done.”
According to documents filed at Brown County Municipal Court yesterday by Favre’s lawyers, Madden has been sending the QB letters, pictures and other materials described as “inappropriate and unprofessional correspondence.” In one letter, Madden allegedly used over 1,000 words to describe his affinity for Favre’s “cankles,” and included a picture of his own “cankles” in the envelope.
While the application for the official restraining order is pending, a Brown County judge has ordered Madden to remain a minimum of 500 yards from his beloved gunslinger, and to cease all written correspondence.
