Cubs ask fans for excuses

CHICAGO, IL — After watching their team spend a small fortune adding new players, many Cubs fans worried that the team might step away from their “lovable loser” image.

Some speculated the Cubs could actually advance to the postseason. Over the years the team and its management have come up with a plethora of excuses to explain their shortcomings. From injured pitchers to Bartman, fans have always had something – something other than the team itself – to blame the losing on.

This season projects to be different: the Cubs have built a team that ought to contend for the NL Central and perhaps even more. Of course, success is never guaranteed, and the organization has left itself with no excuses to explain failure.

This, according to GM Jim Hendry, is where the fans come in: “We’re asking the fans to mail in their ideas for excuses we can use at the end of the season if we blow it. Because in all honesty, we haven’t been able to come up with anything.”

Fans are encouraged to submit any half-brained idea they can come up with, and Hendry is sure the Cub faithful will rise to the challenge. “It’s a fun and creative way to get the fans involved. We all know how important it is to have an excuse – if not several – so why not let them do their part?”

Fans can submit their ideas at whydwelosethisyear.com; the contest will run until late July, at which point the best excuses will begin to be used.
