Lou Piniella opened Chicago Cubs training camp last week with what he described as “personality building exercises.” Piniella, who is beginning his 20th season as a major league manager, prefers these exercises to the more mundane stretching and running that most teams begin the season with.
“I walked into the clubhouse and this guy in a White Sox jersey punches me in the face,” said catcher Michael Barrett. “Before I hit him back I realized it was Lou. He hits pretty hard for an old guy; harder than some catchers I know.”
Piniella spent all day Friday yelling at his new players. He took an entire hour with third baseman Aramis Ramirez, whom he made dress up as an umpire before taking him to task. “I just asked what we would be doing today and he handed me an umpire’s uniform,” said Ramirez. “Then he just started kicking dirt on me and screaming in my face. I guess he has to do certain things to prepare himself for the season before he can whip us into shape.”
When General Manager Jim Hendry stopped by the clubhouse to see how his new investments are working out, Piniella gave Hendry what he likes to call “the ol’ Sweet Lou Welcomes You.” Piniella threw a full bat bag at the face of his new GM, then told him to “go sign some more bad starting pitching,” before once again turning his attention to the players. Hendry denied that what he described as attempted murder would have any negative effect on Piniella’s job security: “At the end of the day, is it any worse than a manager wearing six thousand sweatbands and constantly playing with toothpicks?”
While most players seemed to take it in stride, not all of the Cubs were prepared for Piniella’s antics. “I was scared,” said pitcher Kerry Wood. “I tried hiding in the hot tub, but Lou found me in there and tried to drown me. I’m not complaining; I just don’t know how that made me a better baseball player.”
Derrek Lee also appeared slightly put off by his new manager. “Look, this is gonna sound weird, but I think Lou ate Matt Murton,” the Cubs’ first baseman said. “Matt went into his office around lunchtime and no one has seen him since. I know we picked up Cliff Floyd, but we still need a fourth outfielder, right? Seriously, when’s the last time Cliffy played a full season?”
After the eight-hour practice Piniella ‘met’ with the media, spending most of the time yelling incoherent jibberish. After one reporter asked him if he thought the Cubs could make the playoffs this year, Piniella threw third base at him.
Still, most of the locker room seems to be pleased with the injection of energy - negative or otherwise. “I don’t want to blame it on the previous regime, but some guys have gotten used to being wusses,” Barrett said. “Baseball is all about adversity, and Lou knows that. If he has to eat an outfielder to send a message, so be it.”
