Justin Morneau has only 34 friends on MySpace

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Reigning American League MVP Justin Morneau is dismayed that, despite his rise in popularity and his MVP award, his MySpace page has failed to generate him the sort of mass friendships that he was hoping for.

“I thought after the MVP that I’d get a little bit of traction,” said Morneau. “And for awhile it was good, I’d wake up and have one, sometimes two friend requests, that I’d accept immediately. Then it sort of died down. I haven’t had a request for a week.”

By way of comparison, teammate Torii Hunter has 473 friends on his MySpace; catcher Joe Mauer has 330 friends even though he doesn’t really know how to use a computer. Manager Ron Gardenhire has 44 friends.

“I need to get it to a point of critical mass,” Morneau said. “This is like breaking into the Big Leagues—it doesn’t happen overnight. Eventually you get to a point where everything clicks. I haven’t gotten there yet.”

This week, in an effort to jumpstart his page, Morneau has downloaded a new Twins backdrop from a free MySpace layouts site, and changed his theme song to Sexy Back by Justin Timberlake.

“Better watch out,” Morneau chided, in the general direction of Hunter. “I’m about to be the MVP of MySpace as well.”

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!
