Carmelo Anthony receives “bitch-punch” exemption; suspension shortened
DENVER, CO — The NBA Players Union filed and immediately won a grievance on behalf of suspended superstar Carmelo Anthony, who received a reduction in his suspension because of a seldom-used, “Bitch-Punch” exemption.
“Fortunately for Carmelo, the manner in which he punched the Knicks player–sort of a sneak attack, not really a closed fist, kind of a slap, one where he almost missed the player, all of these things lent this punch to qualify for the BPE,” said union spokeswoman Linda Johnson. “The fact that he ran away following the punch, that just clinched it.”
If Anthony had thrown a “real punch,” and not qualified for the BPE, he’d have been subject to a much longer suspension, possibly season-long.
“The NBA does not want any of its players to fight, ever,” said NBA Commissioner David Stern. “However, if they do, we certainly hope that they use the foresight and good sense that Carmelo showed, and punch like bitches.”
